Considerations
The decisions above were made based upon the following:
- Minimum of 9th grade
- Command of their art
- Past history with the band/unit
- How others respond to them in general
- length of time with unit
- incumbancy
Please note that Captain/co-captain is not a position of authority in the sense
of being responsible for the discipline of the group. That lies squarely with
appointed sponsors and adult leaders. Leaders should be respected and listened
to - however, these individuals should not consider themselves as "band bosses".
Instead they should mentor their section and help demonstrate the best practice -
They should be the LEADER among their section - (refer to the graphic below).
Leadership is a privilige and not a right. Maintaining such a position is at
the sole discretion of the band director.
These are the individuals who will represent the band at "band council" when
we meet the bands on Friday nights. Additional personnel will be added
on a weekly basis serving as section representatives in sections without a co-captains
at the discretion of the band director. Specifically, 2 woodwind, 1 brass, and
1 auxiliary chosen from grades 8-11. These individuals have no leadership function but
have representative function. The director may elect to not send representatives
in all situations.

Roles of the Student-Leader
Please note that a student-leader is first and foremost a student. It is important to remember that in dealing with other students. Sometimes behaviors that young people perceive as "leadership" would be perceived by onlookers as being "out of control" or even "bullying". Please note the following in assuming the rule as a student-leader.
Desired Attributes
- Supportive
- Helpful
- role-model
- Empathetic
Undesired Attributes
- Bossy
- Punishing
- Overbearing
- Yelling
Please note that delegation of punishment is at the sole disgretion of the director. Assigning punishments such as issuing demerits, running, shoes, etc. is outside the authority of any student leader. Your role as a student-leader is that of being a role-model and a helper of the students within your realm of leadership.
Qualifications for Student Leaders
The authority of the 2024-2025 FHS Band Leadership program is established by the 2023-2024 Washington County Schools Student Handbook. (This handbook was in effect during the selection process.) Pertinent portions of the handbook can be found on pages 25-26.
In Summary The drum major is chosen from an audition process from outside judges and is determined by the highest scores in said audition. The auxiliary unit leadership is specified as being at the discretion of the director. While the handbook is silent concerning other band leadership (section captains and co-captains) we have adopted a similar policy concerning these positions as the auxiliary.
FHS Band Leadership Critera--positions other than Drum Major
- Student has attained grade 9-12
- Student can be grade 8 only if there are no 9-12 students in the section
- Each section (Woodwind, Brass, Percussion, Auxiliary) will have at least 1 captain
- At the discretion of the director, a section can be divided into 2 sections (ex: Upper/Low Brass)
- Co-Captains are optional for sections larger than 4 students
- No Co-Captains will be appointed for smaller sections
- In sections that have no co-captain, the director may appoint a weekly section representative from students between grades 8 and 12 to represent band council-optional
